# Best European Web Hosting in 2026: EU Servers, Data Protection Terms, and Prices Compared

For most sites with European visitors, start with Hostinger.

You choose a server in France, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, or the UK at checkout, and Premium costs $143.52 for four years, then renews at $10.99 a month.

Developers and data-sensitive projects should look at Hetzner first.

It runs its own data centers in Germany and Finland, says admin data is processed only in the EU, and its CX23 server costs $6.49 a month before VAT.

If your visitors are in Europe, two questions come before price: where your site’s data physically sits, and what the host’s terms promise about data protection.

Table of Contents

## Why server location matters for European sites

- **Speed:** a nearby server answers faster. Our US-based Namecheap site answered in 126 ms from San Francisco but 523 ms from London.
- **Data protection:** GDPR asks where personal data is stored and who processes it. An EU server and a data processing agreement (DPA) make those answers simpler.
- **Customer questions:** European business clients often ask where their data lives before they sign.

Picking a European server doesn’t make your site GDPR-compliant by itself. Compliance depends on how you collect and handle personal data.

None of this is legal advice. A short list of [what GDPR asks of your host](https://hostingguider.com/blog/gdpr-compliant-hosting-requirements/) helps you prepare questions before you contact sales.

## The best European hosting at a glance

1. **Hostinger:** best for most European sites
2. **Hetzner:** best EU servers for developers
3. **IONOS:** best for businesses that want a German host with phone support
4. **OVHcloud:** best for data sovereignty requirements
5. **Contabo:** most RAM for the money in Europe

| Host | Where it’s based | European server locations | Type | Entry price | Current plans |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hostinger | Vilnius, Lithuania | France, Germany, Lithuania, Netherlands, UK | Shared and cloud | $2.99/mo on 48 months, then $10.99 | [See Hostinger plans](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/hostinger) |
| Hetzner | Germany | Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki | Unmanaged cloud and VPS | $6.49/mo plus $0.60 IPv4, excl. VAT | [See Hetzner plans](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/hetzner) |
| IONOS | Germany | Frankfurt, Berlin, Paris, London, Worcester, Logroño | Shared and VPS | $4/mo for 1 year, then $8 | [See IONOS plans](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/ionos) |
| OVHcloud | France | European sites among 46 data centers worldwide | Shared, VPS, cloud | VPS-1 $4.54/mo on a 12-month commitment | [See OVHcloud plans](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/ovhcloud) |
| Contabo | Not in our check | EU region | Unmanaged VPS | €5.50/mo incl. VAT on 24 months | [See Contabo plans](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/contabo) |

We read each host’s data center, privacy, and pricing pages from September 25 to 28, 2026.

IONOS’s data center list comes from its cloud page; its web hosting pages don’t say where shared sites are stored.

European prices move with VAT and currency, so confirm the final checkout total for your country before you pay.

## How we chose the best European hosting

We looked only at hosts HostingGuider reviews, and asked what a European site owner needs to know before buying.

If you’re new to this, start with [how hosting plan types differ](https://hostingguider.com/topics/web-hosting-basics/).

- **Server location:** whether you can choose an EU data center, and which ones.
- **Data protection terms:** DPAs, where admin data is processed, and certifications.
- **Price and billing,** including VAT where it applies.
- **Support and refunds,** including withdrawal rights and auto-renewal notice periods.
- **Our own data:** response times from Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and London, measured on our Singapore and US accounts.

## 1. Hostinger: best for most European sites

**Best for:** blogs, shops, and small business sites whose visitors are mostly in the EU or UK.

**Skip it if:** your clients expect a phone line, or you can’t prepay four years to get the low rate.

Hostinger lets you pick one of [five European server countries](https://www.hostinger.com/support/1583267-where-are-hostinger-servers-located/?utm_source=hostingguider.com) when you order. Its [data processing addendum](https://www.hostinger.com/legal/dpa?utm_source=hostingguider.com), revised September 15, 2026, refers to the EU GDPR.

![Hostinger](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/hostinger.webp "Hostinger")

Premium runs $2.99 a month on the 48-month term. That’s $143.52 up front, and the plan then renews at $10.99 a month.

[Hostinger’s European response times](https://hostingguider.com/reviews/hostinger/) come from our Singapore cloud server: 283 ms to Frankfurt and 317 ms to Amsterdam. An EU server sits closer still.

**Limitation:** support is chat only, and the headline price needs that 48-month prepay. Phone help is a big reason [some buyers pick IONOS over Hostinger](https://hostingguider.com/comparison/ionos-vs-hostinger/).

## 2. Hetzner: best EU servers for developers

**Best for:** technical teams that want German or Finnish data centers owned by the host itself.

**Skip it if:** you expect the host to manage updates, security, and backups for you.

[Hetzner runs its own data center parks](https://hostingguider.com/reviews/hetzner/) in Falkenstein, Nuremberg, and Helsinki.

Its [data protection page](https://docs.hetzner.com/general/company-and-policy/data-protection-at-hetzner/?utm_source=hostingguider.com) says admin data is processed only in the EU, and those parks are ISO 27001 certified.

![Hetzner](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/hetzner-hero.webp "Hetzner")

Sovereignty is where [OVHcloud and Hetzner differ](https://hostingguider.com/comparison/ovhcloud-vs-hetzner/) most for EU data: Hetzner has certifications and a standard DPA, but no sovereignty qualification like SecNumCloud.

The CX23 cloud server gives 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM, and at least 20 TB of traffic for $6.49 a month before VAT, billed hourly up to that cap.

Its SLA promises 99.9% monthly availability, paid out as cloud credit.

**Limitation:** Hetzner offers its standard DPA only, not individual ones. IPv4 costs $0.60 a month extra, and its shared cloud plans showed as unavailable on September 25, 2026.

[Get Hetzner](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/hetzner)

## 3. IONOS: best for businesses that want a German host with phone support

**Best for:** small businesses that want a European company, a personal consultant, and long-term shared value.

**Skip it if:** you need to confirm where your shared site is stored before buying.

IONOS is headquartered in Germany and lists [data centers](https://cloud.ionos.com/data-centers?utm_source=hostingguider.com) in Frankfurt, Berlin, Paris, London, Worcester, and Logroño.

![IONOS](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/ionos-hero.webp "IONOS")

Its web hosting includes daily backups kept for 14 days, unlimited websites, and [a free IONOS personal consultant](https://hostingguider.com/reviews/ionos/) by phone, email, or chat.

The Essential plan starts at $4 a month for its first year. From year two, the same plan costs $8 a month, so budget for the doubled rate.

**Limitation:** its web hosting pages don’t say where shared hosting sites are stored, so ask sales for the city before you order.

[Get IONOS](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/ionos)

## 4. OVHcloud: best for data sovereignty requirements

**Best for:** organizations that need their data under European law, such as public bodies and regulated sectors.

**Skip it if:** you want a simple shared plan with clear site limits.

OVHcloud is a French provider with 46 data centers on four continents.

Its [SecNumCloud](https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/secnumcloud/?utm_source=hostingguider.com) offering says “only European legislation can apply to your data, and anti-DDoS protection is included on every product.

![OVHcloud](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/ovhcloud-hero.webp "OVHcloud")

[OVHcloud’s VPS-1 plan](https://hostingguider.com/reviews/ovhcloud/) gives 2 vCores, 4 GB of RAM, and 40 GB of NVMe for $4.54 a month on a 12-month commitment, with daily backups kept 7 days.

**Limitation:** OVHcloud’s own pages disagree on how many sites some web hosting plans allow, and it doesn’t publish a VPS renewal guarantee.

[Get OVHcloud](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/ovhcloud)

## 5. Contabo: most RAM for the money in Europe

**Best for:** technical users who want a big EU server for a small bill and can support themselves.

**Skip it if:** you want a money-back guarantee or a host that fixes server problems for you.

Contabo’s [Cloud VPS 4](https://contabo.com/en-us/vps/?utm_source=hostingguider.com) gives 4 vCPUs, 8 GB of RAM, and 100 GB of SSD for €5.50 a month including VAT on a 24-month term, in its EU region.

![Contabo](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/contabo-hero-1024x733.webp "Contabo")

Read the renewal clause first: [a Contabo contract extends automatically](https://hostingguider.com/reviews/contabo-review/) by the same term unless you cancel with four weeks’ notice.

**Limitation:** there’s no money-back guarantee; EU consumers get a 14-day right of withdrawal, charged for time used. Its 99.9% uptime promise has no stated credits.

[Get Contabo](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/contabo)

## What to ask a host about European data

1. **Which data center will my site use?** Get the city, not just “Europe.2. **Is there a data processing agreement (DPA)?** Where is it, and when was it last updated?
3. **Where are backups stored?** Backups can sit in a different country from the site.
4. **Where is support and admin data processed?**
5. **Which certifications cover my data center?** ISO 27001 is a common baseline.

## Other hosts with European servers we considered

- **Kinsta:** 30 data centers you can choose per site, for managed WordPress at a much higher price.
- **Namecheap:** its data center article lists Amsterdam for shared hosting, alongside Phoenix.
- **SiteGround:** 11 data centers on Google Cloud, including Europe, with 30 days of daily backups.

## Which European host should you choose?

**Most European sites, lowest cost?** Hostinger with an EU server.

**Developer, want EU-owned data centers?** Hetzner.

**Business, want a German host and a consultant?** IONOS.

**Need European legal jurisdiction for data?** OVHcloud.

**Want a big EU server cheaply?** Contabo.

**Picking an EU data center today?** Choose your country on [Hostinger’s order page](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/hostinger), or compare Nuremberg and Helsinki servers on [Hetzner’s cloud pricing](https://hostingguider.com/recommend/hetzner).

## Frequently asked questions

### Are European web hosts GDPR compliant?

No host can make your site compliant for you. EU servers and a DPA support compliance, but GDPR depends on how your site collects and handles personal data.

### Can I use a US-based host for a European audience?

Yes, if it offers European data centers and a DPA. Choose the EU server at checkout and ask where backups are kept.

### Which European country is best for hosting?

Pick the location closest to most of your visitors. Germany, the Netherlands, and France are central for much of Europe, and the UK suits British audiences.
Distance can add [hundreds of milliseconds per request](https://hostingguider.com/blog/how-server-location-affects-web-hosting-performance/), as our Namecheap numbers above show.

### Is European hosting slower for visitors outside Europe?

Yes, distance adds delay. Our Singapore server answered Singapore in 157 ms and London in 454 ms. A CDN reduces the gap for cached pages.

### Do prices include VAT?

It depends on the host and your country. Hetzner lists prices excluding VAT, while Contabo’s page showed prices including VAT to our European check.

### What is data sovereignty?

It means your data is subject to the laws of the country where it’s stored and processed. OVHcloud’s SecNumCloud offering is built so only European law applies.

### Which hosts have data centers in Germany?

Hostinger lists Germany among its server countries, Hetzner runs its own parks in Falkenstein and Nuremberg, and IONOS lists Frankfurt and Berlin.

## How we compared European hosting

Each claim on this list comes from the host’s own data center, data protection, or pricing page, read between September 25 and 28, 2026.

Our response times come from our Hostinger Cloud Startup (Singapore) and Namecheap Stellar Plus (US) accounts, and the [receipts for the accounts we bought](https://hostingguider.com/purchased-hosting-evidence/) are public.

We haven’t bought Hetzner, IONOS, OVHcloud, or Contabo plans, so their sections rest on published terms. Placement follows [how HostingGuider tests and ranks hosts](https://hostingguider.com/methodology/), not payments.
