# OVHcloud vs Hetzner

## OVHcloud vs Hetzner: European Cloud Infrastructure -Price, Performance, Reliability

Both are European cloud infrastructure providers built for developers and technical teams. Neither manages your applications. Both own their data centres. Both run on renewable energy from self-owned sources.

OVHcloud is a French company with global data centre scale and the largest independent cloud infrastructure in Europe. It passes mobile Core Web Vitals and returns 26ms from Singapore. It also blocks multiple US and Asian test nodes. Hetzner is a German company with the best desktop TBT in this comparison series at 31ms. It holds Grade A+ SSL, supports HTTP/3, and offers cloud servers for a few euros per month.

*A side-by-side comparison of OVHcloud and Hetzner hosting platforms.*

**Hetzner’s Trustpilot rating is 3.3/5** — the lowest of any provider reviewed in this series. **OVHcloud holds 4.8/5.** The context behind Hetzner’s score matters and is addressed below.

OVHcloud was founded in 1999 in Roubaix, France. It operates 43 data centres across four continents. Its infrastructure spans bare metal dedicated servers, cloud instances, and managed Kubernetes. It uses proprietary water cooling technology and owns its energy supply, verified through the Green Web Foundation under its own OVHcloud certification. It is unmanaged by default — you get the server and the responsibility.

Hetzner was founded in 1997 in Gunzenhausen, Germany. It operates data centres in Nuremberg, Falkenstein, and Helsinki, with cloud infrastructure extended to the US East and West Coast and Singapore. Every server runs on AMD EPYC processors with NVMe SSD in RAID10 configuration. ISO 27001:2022 certified. Also unmanaged.

## Quick Verdict

OVHcloud wins on mobile Core Web Vitals, European and Asian latency (where its nodes are accessible), concurrent load reachability, desktop FCP, and Trustpilot rating.

Hetzner wins on SSL grade, HTTP/3, desktop TBT (best in this series), global geographic reach (OVHcloud blocks US and other nodes), pricing, and ISO 27001 certification.

Both are verified green through self-owned renewable energy. Both hold perfect uptime. Both are unmanaged.

## How We Tested

We ran direct technical audits against each provider’s official corporate domain: ovhcloud.com for OVHcloud and www.hetzner.com for Hetzner.

An important note on OVHcloud’s global test results: KeyCDN test nodes in New York, San Francisco, Amsterdam, and Bangalore all returned “Host Not Founderrors. The OVHcloud review attributes this to aggressive DDoS protection and geographic firewall rules blocking automated test traffic. This is the same firewall behaviour documented for Rocket.net (Cloudflare WAF). The OVHcloud nodes that did connect returned 301 redirect responses. The latency figures for Singapore (26ms) and Frankfurt (56ms) are from connections that succeeded.

Hetzner’s load test average (895ms) is taken from the review summary. The K6 test table records uptime and reachability but does not separately state an average latency figure.

Tools: Google PageSpeed Insights for mobile Core Web Vitals, GTmetrix for desktop rendering, K6 Load Cloud for concurrent traffic simulation, KeyCDN for global TTFB, Uptime Robot for availability, Qualys SSL Labs for SSL grade, HTTP/3 Check for protocol support, The Green Web Foundation for sustainability.

For complete individual test data, see our [OVHcloud review](https://hostingguider.com/reviews/ovhcloud/) and [Hetzner review](https://hostingguider.com/reviews/hetzner/).

## Performance: Eight Tests, Head to Head

### Test 1: Mobile Core Web Vitals (Google PageSpeed Insights)

**OVHcloud Mobile**

| Metric | Result | Google Threshold | Status |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| LCP (Loading) | 1.8s | Under 2.5s | Pass |
| INP (Interaction) | 122ms | Under 200ms | Pass |
| TTFB (Server) | 1.1s | Under 0.8s | Advisory Fail |

**Hetzner Mobile**

| Metric | Result | Google Threshold | Status |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| INP (Interaction) | 146ms | Under 200ms | Pass |
| LCP (Loading) | 2.7s | Under 2.5s | Fail |
| CLS (Stability) | 0.12 | Under 0.1 | Fail |
| Overall CWV | Assessment | Failed | |

*Hetzner Google PageSpeed Insights*

**OVHcloud passes both LCP and INP.** LCP at 1.8s is well inside Google’s 2.5s threshold. INP at 122ms is an excellent interactive response time. The 1.1s TTFB is an advisory failure — it is not one of Google’s three Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), so it does not change the overall CWV assessment.

Hetzner fails two of three CWV metrics. LCP of 2.7s misses by 200ms. CLS of 0.12 misses by 0.02. The Hetzner review explains both failures as products of the heavy marketing homepage serving global users from European servers. [A 1.1s TTFB on a European server reaching global audiences is expected without a CDN](https://hostingguider.com/blog/fix-ttfb-hosting-level/) — and both providers share this TTFB value.

**Winner: OVHcloud**

### Test 2: Global Server Latency (KeyCDN TTFB)

**OVHcloud** (accessible nodes only)

| Location | TTFB | Status |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Singapore | 25.86ms | Fast (301 redirect) |
| Frankfurt, DE | 55.76ms | Good (301 redirect) |
| London, UK | 119.32ms | Average (301 redirect) |
| New York, USA | Blocked | Host Not Found |
| SF, Bangalore, Amsterdam | Blocked | Host Not Found |

**Hetzner**

| Location | TTFB | Rating |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Frankfurt, Germany | 71.31ms | Blazing Fast |
| Amsterdam, NL | 99.04ms | Blazing Fast |
| London, UK | 116.60ms | Optimised |
| New York, USA | 266.13ms | Good |
| San Francisco, USA | 461.23ms | Average |
| Bangalore, India | 504.80ms | Average |
| Sydney, Australia | 854.07ms | Slow |
| Singapore | 917.73ms | Slow |

![Hetzner global TTFB latency heatmap showing server response times worldwide](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/hetzner-keycdn.webp)

*etzner Global Latency TTFB Heatmap Test*

The comparison here is constrained by OVHcloud’s blocked nodes. Where OVHcloud connects, it is faster: Frankfurt 56ms vs Hetzner 71ms. Singapore 26ms vs Hetzner 918ms. But OVHcloud blocks New York, San Francisco, Amsterdam, and Bangalore. Hetzner reaches all eight tested locations.

For a developer building a global application, Hetzner’s geographic reach is more predictable. OVHcloud’s aggressive DDoS filtering is appropriate for protecting enterprise infrastructure but it means automated monitoring tools and global CDN checks may fail to connect from multiple regions. The underlying hardware is fast when it accepts connections.

**Winner: OVHcloud in EU and Asia (faster where accessible). Hetzner on global geographic reach.**

### Test 3: Desktop Rendering (GTmetrix)

| Metric | OVHcloud | Hetzner |
| --- | --- | --- |
| GTmetrix Grade | C | C |
| First Contentful Paint | 507ms | Not compared directly |
| Desktop LCP | Not recorded | 3.6s |
| Total Blocking Time | 318ms | 31ms |
| TTFB (lab) | Not recorded | 633ms |

*GTmetrix performance report for OVHcloud*

[IMAGE: “Hetzner GTmetrix Speed Test Report. Caption: Hetzner Grade C. LCP 3.6s on the large corporate homepage. TBT of 31ms is the lowest recorded across all providers in this comparison series. Scripts almost never block the page from responding to user interaction.]

Both providers earn Grade C. The weakness is different for each.

OVHcloud delivers an elite FCP of **507ms** — content appears on screen quickly. Then TBT of **318ms** blocks the page before it becomes interactive. OVHcloud’s server delivers content fast. Its frontend scripts are heavy.

Hetzner delivers a **TBT of 31ms** — the lowest in this entire comparison series. Pages become interactive almost instantly after visual content loads. The LCP of 3.6s on Hetzner’s marketing homepage reflects heavy images and 3D visuals rather than server speed. The TTFB of 633ms from the GTmetrix test location confirms the server processes requests quickly.

**Winner: OVHcloud on FCP. Hetzner on TBT. Tie on grade.**

### Test 4: Concurrent Load (K6 Load Cloud, 50 Virtual Users)

| Parameter | OVHcloud | Hetzner |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Uptime Under Load | 100% | 100% |
| Reachability | 99.7% | 98.9% |
| Avg Response Latency | 506ms | 895ms (review summary) |

![Hetzner Load Testing with K6 Cloud](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/hetzner-k6-clooud.webp)

*Hetzner Load Testing with K6 Cloud*

OVHcloud holds **99.7% reachability** against Hetzner’s **98.9%**. Under concurrent load both providers drop a small number of requests, but OVHcloud drops fewer.

The review explicitly recommends pre-scaling OVHcloud resources before anticipated traffic surges. Both providers are [unmanaged infrastructure where auto-scaling requires manual configuration](https://hostingguider.com/blog/cloud-hosting-auto-scaling-reality/) rather than an automatic platform response.

**Winner: OVHcloud** on reachability under load.

### Test 5: Uptime (Uptime Robot, 30-Day Monitor)

| Window | OVHcloud | Hetzner |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Last 7 Days | 100%, 0 incidents | 100%, 0 incidents |
| Last 30 Days | 100%, 0 incidents | 100%, 0 incidents |

![Hetzner uptime monitoring dashboard from UptimeRobot](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/hetzner-uptime.webp)

*Hetzner Uptime Monitoring Results (UptimeRobot)*

Both providers deliver perfect availability. Hetzner explicitly cites DE-CIX and AMS-IX multi-redundant connections and ISO 27001:2022 certification as the infrastructure basis. OVHcloud’s 43-data-centre global network and proprietary network architecture underpin the same result.

**Winner: Tie**

### Test 6: SSL Security (Qualys SSL Labs)

| Feature | OVHcloud | Hetzner |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Overall Grade | A | A+ |
| HSTS | Not confirmed | Enabled |
| TLS | TLS 1.3 supported | TLS 1.3 |

![Hetzner SSL Labs security grade and encryption report](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/hetzner-ssl.webp)

*Hetzner SSL Security Test*

**Hetzner’s Grade A+ beats OVHcloud’s Grade A.** HSTS enforcement is the difference. Hetzner enables HSTS by default, which forces browsers to use HTTPS even before a cached certificate is available. [The practical difference between Grade A and A+ in SSL configuration](https://hostingguider.com/blog/https-not-enough-hosting-security-layers/) comes down to whether browsers can be forced to connect insecurely under any condition. Grade A+ means they cannot.

OVHcloud reaches A+ by enabling HSTS — a single configuration step.

**Winner: Hetzner**

### Test 7: Protocol Support (HTTP/3 Check)

| Protocol | OVHcloud | Hetzner |
| --- | --- | --- |
| HTTP/3 | Not supported | Supported |
| QUIC | Not supported | Supported |
| 0-RTT | Not available | Supported |

![HTTP/3 protocol support test for OVHcloud](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/ovhcloud-http3.webp)

*HTTP/3 protocol support test for OVHcloud*

![Hetzner HTTP/3 protocol support verification result](https://hostingguider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/hetzner-http3.webp)

*Hetzner HTTP/3 Support Test Results*

Hetzner supports the complete modern protocol stack including 0-RTT. OVHcloud does not support HTTP/3 by default. The OVHcloud review’s tactical recommendations explicitly note that enabling HTTP/3 requires manual server configuration.

For developers who [understand what HTTP/3 does for mobile connections under packet loss](https://hostingguider.com/blog/http3-quic-hosting-support/), Hetzner is ready at launch. OVHcloud requires an additional configuration step after deployment.

**Winner: Hetzner**

### Test 8: Environmental Impact (Green Web Foundation)

| Provider | Status | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| OVHcloud | Verified Green | OVHcloud proprietary (water cooling) |
| Hetzner | Verified Green | Hetzner self-owned (hydropower + wind + solar) |

*Hetzner sustainability and renewable energy analysis.*

Both providers hold direct self-owned green certifications — not CDN renewable offsets. OVHcloud’s proprietary water cooling reduces energy consumption in its data centres. Hetzner uses hydropower in Germany, hydropower and wind in Finland, and launched the HT Clean Energy solar initiative in 2025.

For EU enterprises that need to document their digital carbon footprint with self-owned rather than offset energy sources, both providers deliver the same calibre of certification.

**Winner: Tie** (both self-owned renewable, different energy types)

## Price: The Clearest Winner

The article title includes price. The comparison here is direct.

Hetzner cloud servers start at a few euros per month. Entry-level VPS with AMD EPYC processors and NVMe SSD is available at prices no comparable European cloud provider matches. The review explicitly states Hetzner achieves this because it owns and operates its own data centres, servers, and network infrastructure. No third-party cloud margins. No reseller markup.

OVHcloud uses a utility-based pricing model with transparent monthly or hourly rates. It does not use aggressive introductory discounts followed by steep renewal hikes. The review describes it as targeted toward enterprise resource consumption — which means the pricing is designed for enterprise deployment scale, not entry-level VPS.

For a developer or startup wanting maximum compute per euro in a European data centre, Hetzner is the price winner in this comparison. For an enterprise deploying across multiple global regions with dedicated bare metal, vRack private networking, and managed Kubernetes, OVHcloud’s pricing is competitive at its target scale.

**Price Winner: Hetzner** for developers and small teams. **OVHcloud** for enterprise scale deployments where global data centre presence is required.

## Reliability: The Full Picture

The review summary rates Hetzner at 3.3/5 on Trustpilot — the lowest of any provider in this series. Understanding what drives this score matters for a reliability comparison.

The Hetzner review identifies one primary cause: aggressive account verification that results in unexpected account suspensions for new users connecting from VPN connections or with mismatched billing details. Established customers with completed ID verification rarely report suspensions. The verification process is strict because Hetzner’s clean network directly benefits all customers by preventing abuse.

OVHcloud holds 4.8/5 on Trustpilot. This reflects a different user base — primarily enterprise customers with predictable billing and dedicated account relationships, rather than a broad consumer hosting audience.

For a developer setting up a Hetzner account: complete ID verification on day one. Sign up from a direct residential connection, not a VPN. The infrastructure quality behind that one-time step is excellent.

For objective infrastructure reliability: both providers record 100% uptime across 30 days. Both are ISO-certified or equivalent. Hetzner holds ISO 27001:2022 explicitly. OVHcloud’s reliability is backed by its 43-data-centre global network.

## Pricing and Value

### OVHcloud Pricing

OVHcloud’s utility-based pricing model charges monthly or hourly rates without the introductory discount games used by shared hosting providers. Bare metal dedicated servers, cloud instances, and managed Kubernetes are billed at predictable rates. No free domain is mentioned. SSL included.

## Final Verdict

OVHcloud and Hetzner solve the same problem for different scales. Both are European cloud infrastructure for technical teams. Both own their data centres and renewable energy. Both are unmanaged.

OVHcloud wins on mobile Core Web Vitals, EU and Asian latency, concurrent load reachability, and Trustpilot satisfaction. It serves enterprise deployments needing global bare metal, vRack private networking, and managed Kubernetes. Its 4.8/5 Trustpilot rating reflects a satisfied enterprise user base.

Hetzner wins on price, SSL grade, HTTP/3, geographic reach, ISO 27001 certification, and desktop TBT. Its 3.3/5 Trustpilot rating reflects a broad developer audience where account verification friction generates negative reviews — not infrastructure quality failures. Verified Hetzner customers who complete setup report excellent reliability.

**OVHcloud is best for:** Enterprise teams needing global data centre scale, managed Kubernetes, vRack private networking, and bare metal hardware across multiple continents. Teams serving Asian audiences where OVHcloud’s Singapore node provides measurable latency advantages.

**Hetzner is best for:** Developers and startups wanting maximum compute per euro in ISO-certified European data centres, with Grade A+ SSL, HTTP/3, and AMD EPYC NVMe servers at prices no other European cloud provider matches.

## Tactical Recommendations

**For OVHcloud: enable HTTP/3 manually on your web server.** The OVHcloud review specifically recommends this as a priority action. On Nginx, enabling QUIC and HTTP/3 requires adding the http3 directive to the server block and confirming QUIC port access through the OVHcloud firewall. On LiteSpeed, HTTP/3 is a dashboard toggle. This single step closes the protocol gap with Hetzner and improves mobile delivery on cellular connections.

**For OVHcloud: deploy a third-party CDN for US and Asian visitors.** The blocked test nodes in New York, San Francisco, and Bangalore confirm that OVHcloud’s default firewall configuration prevents standard monitoring and CDN validation traffic. Adding Cloudflare or another CDN in front of OVHcloud serves US and Asian visitors from edge nodes without their requests reaching the OVHcloud firewall. Static assets are served regionally. Dynamic requests still route to OVHcloud but the CDN handles the global first-connection issue.

**For Hetzner: complete account verification before needing urgent support.** The most reported issue with Hetzner is account suspension during initial verification — triggered by VPN connections or mismatched billing details. Completing identity verification proactively at account creation, using a direct residential connection, eliminates this risk. After verification is complete, Hetzner’s infrastructure quality is consistently strong.

**For Hetzner: add a CDN layer before serving Asian or Pacific audiences.** Hetzner’s Singapore colocation point exists but the test traffic routed to European servers during testing, returning 918ms. Adding Cloudflare free plan or another CDN in front of Hetzner ensures visitors in Asia and the Pacific receive assets from a nearby edge node rather than the European origin.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is OVHcloud or Hetzner better for developers?

Hetzner for most developer use cases due to lower pricing, Grade A+ SSL, HTTP/3 active by default, and AMD EPYC NVMe servers. OVHcloud for developers needing global multi-region deployments, managed Kubernetes, or vRack private networking at enterprise scale. Both are unmanaged and require Linux knowledge.

### Why is Hetzner’s Trustpilot score so low?

Hetzner’s 3.3/5 Trustpilot rating is primarily driven by new account suspensions during identity verification. Accounts created from VPN connections or with billing and registration detail mismatches are flagged and suspended automatically. This generates negative reviews from users caught by the verification process. Established customers who complete setup correctly report reliable, high-performance infrastructure. Complete ID verification on day one and avoid VPN connections during account creation.

### Does OVHcloud work globally?

Partially. OVHcloud operates 43 data centres globally. However, the KeyCDN test showed that aggressive DDoS protection and geographic firewall rules block standard monitoring and automated traffic from multiple US and Asian locations. For human visitors and properly configured CDN traffic, OVHcloud’s global coverage is extensive. For automated monitoring tools and certain cloud traffic origins, firewall restrictions may block connections.

### Which is cheaper, OVHcloud or Hetzner?

Hetzner for developer and startup scale. Its cloud servers start at a few euros per month with AMD EPYC and NVMe SSD. OVHcloud’s utility-based pricing targets enterprise deployment scales. For equivalent entry-level VPS resources, Hetzner is consistently lower cost. Both avoid introductory discounts and renewal hikes.

### Does Hetzner include DDoS protection?

Yes. Basic DDoS protection is included on all Hetzner cloud and dedicated services at no extra cost. It filters common attack patterns at the network level automatically. OVHcloud also includes Anti-DDoS protection, which is aggressive — the same system that blocked US monitoring nodes in testing.

### Which is more reliable, OVHcloud or Hetzner?

Both record 100% uptime across 30-day monitoring. Hetzner holds ISO 27001:2022 certification with multi-redundant DE-CIX and AMS-IX network connections. OVHcloud operates 43 global data centres with redundant infrastructure. For infrastructure reliability measured by availability, both are equivalent. OVHcloud has a better Trustpilot satisfaction rating (4.8 vs 3.3), though Hetzner’s lower score reflects account verification issues rather than infrastructure failures.
