Contabo vs Hetzner: The Ultra-Budget VPS Battle for Developers on a Shoestring
Both companies are German. Both are unmanaged. Both start below $6 per month for cloud VPS. Contabo packs 4 vCPUs and 8GB RAM into its entry plan while Hetzner starts with smaller specs. Hetzner connects directly to DE-CIX, holds ISO 27001:2022 certification, and owns its own hydropower and wind energy supply. Contabo delivers 64ms in Singapore where Hetzner returns 918ms.

This is not a comparison between a budget host and a quality one. It is a comparison between two different philosophies about what raw infrastructure should optimise for.
Contabo optimises for resources per dollar. More RAM, more CPU, more NVMe storage at a price that defies the market. Windows Server supported. Flat pricing that never changes. DDoS protection on every plan. The infrastructure is globally distributed enough to serve Europe, North America, and Asia at competitive latency.
Hetzner optimises for European infrastructure quality. AMD EPYC processors and NVMe in RAID10. A direct connection to DE-CIX, one of the world’s largest internet exchanges. ISO 27001:2022 certified data centres running on self-owned hydropower and wind energy. The desktop TBT of 31ms is the lowest recorded across every provider in this comparison series.
Quick Verdict
Contabo wins on resources per dollar, global reach outside Europe, mobile Core Web Vitals, Windows Server support, and public user satisfaction ratings.
Hetzner wins on European infrastructure quality, desktop JavaScript blocking time (31ms TBT is exceptional), direct DE-CIX peering, ISO 27001:2022 certification, and self-owned renewable energy. For European-primary audiences and developers who care about infrastructure certification, Hetzner is the higher-quality platform despite its smaller entry-level resource allocation.

How We Tested
We ran direct technical audits against each provider’s live corporate domain: www.contabo.com for Contabo and www.hetzner.com for Hetzner.
Tools: Google PageSpeed Insights for mobile Core Web Vitals, DebugBear (Contabo) and GTmetrix (Hetzner) for desktop rendering, K6 Load Cloud for concurrent load, KeyCDN for TTFB, Uptime Robot for 30-day monitoring, Qualys SSL Labs for SSL grade, HTTP/3 Check for protocol support, The Green Web Foundation for sustainability.
Note: Contabo’s corporate site has an active WAF that may affect some automated test results, similar to Vultr. Where results are potentially WAF-affected, this is noted. The Hetzner review notes that mobile field data (TTFB 1.1s, LCP 2.7s) reflects global users across all device types and network speeds, with European users experiencing considerably better numbers from direct DE-CIX connections.
For complete individual test data, see our Contabo review and Hetzner review.
Performance: Eight Tests, Head to Head
Test 1: Mobile Core Web Vitals (Google PageSpeed Insights)
Contabo Mobile
| Metric | Result | Google Threshold | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP (Loading) | 1.9s | Under 2.5s | Pass |
| INP (Interaction) | 196ms | Under 200ms | Pass |
| CLS (Stability) | 0 | Under 0.1 | Pass |
[IMAGE: “Contabo Google Core Web Vitals result”. Caption: Contabo passes all three Core Web Vitals. LCP 1.9s, INP 196ms (just inside threshold), CLS a perfect 0. All three within Google’s requirements.]
Hetzner Mobile
| Metric | Result | Google Threshold | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP (Loading) | 2.7s | Under 2.5s | Needs Improvement |
| INP (Interaction) | 146ms | Under 200ms | Pass |
| CLS (Stability) | 0.12 | Under 0.1 | Needs Improvement |
| FCP (First Paint) | 2.4s | Under 1.8s | Needs Improvement |
| TTFB (field data) | 1.1s | Under 0.8s | Needs Improvement |

Contabo passes all three Core Web Vitals. Hetzner passes one of five measured metrics.
The notable exception is INP. Hetzner’s 146ms is the better INP result: 50ms below Contabo’s 196ms and among the strongest interactive response times in this comparison series. This reflects AMD EPYC processing power and NVMe storage handling click and tap responses extremely fast.
Hetzner’s review explicitly acknowledges that the field data LCP and TTFB are pulled upward by global users in Asia, South America, and Africa connecting to European servers from a distance. European users on Hetzner infrastructure experience materially better numbers.
Winner: Contabo on CWV compliance. Hetzner on INP specifically.
Test 2: Global Server Latency (KeyCDN TTFB)
Contabo
| Location | TTFB | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt, Germany | 63ms | Blazing Fast |
| Singapore | 64ms | Blazing Fast |
| New York, USA | 84ms | Blazing Fast |
| London, UK | 139ms | Optimised |
| Sydney, Australia | 346ms | Physical Distance |

Hetzner
| Location | TTFB | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt, Germany | 71ms | Blazing Fast |
| Amsterdam, Netherlands | 99ms | Blazing Fast |
| London, UK | 117ms | Optimised |
| New York, USA | 266ms | Good |
| San Francisco, USA | 461ms | Average |
| Bangalore, India | 505ms | Average |
| Sydney, Australia | 854ms | Slow |
| Singapore | 918ms | Slow |

The geographic story is the clearest differentiator in this comparison. Contabo returns 64ms in Singapore. Hetzner returns 918ms in Singapore. Contabo returns 84ms in New York. Hetzner returns 266ms.
Hetzner’s European results are excellent and benefit from DE-CIX direct peering. Frankfurt at 71ms reflects one of Europe’s best network exchange connections. But beyond Europe, Hetzner has no CDN layer softening the physical distance penalty.
Contabo’s consistent sub-85ms results across Frankfurt, Singapore, and New York simultaneously suggest a global distribution layer. Both providers serve European audiences well. Only Contabo serves non-European audiences fast from the same plan.
Winner: Contabo globally. Hetzner within Europe specifically.
Test 3: Desktop Rendering
| Metric | Contabo (DebugBear) | Hetzner (GTmetrix) |
|---|---|---|
| Grade | Lab 70% (DebugBear) | Grade C |
| LCP | 527ms (lab) | 3.6s |
| TTFB | 412ms (lab) | 633ms |
| Total Blocking Time | 6,200ms | 31ms |
| CLS | 0 (perfect) | 0.06 (passes) |

Hetzner’s 31ms Total Blocking Time is the most remarkable single number in this comparison. It is the lowest TBT recorded across every provider in this comparison series. HostPapa at 92ms was previously described as elite. SiteGround at 221ms was praised. Namecheap at 103ms was notable. Hetzner at 31ms is in a different category.
TBT measures how long JavaScript execution prevents the page from responding to user input after it loads. At 31ms, Hetzner’s corporate homepage becomes fully interactive almost immediately. AMD EPYC processors with NVMe RAID10 storage process scripts fast enough that blocking is nearly eliminated.
Contabo’s 6,200ms TBT is at the other extreme and reflects heavy marketing JavaScript on their corporate site. The server LCP of 527ms confirms fast hardware. The frontend code undermines it.
Winner: Hetzner on TBT by a historic margin. Contabo on raw server LCP speed.
Test 4: Concurrent Load (K6 Cloud, 50 Virtual Users)
| Parameter | Contabo | Hetzner |
|---|---|---|
| Uptime Under Load | 100% | 100% |
| Reachability | 100% | 98.9% |
| Active Monitoring Series | 748 | 748 |

Contabo’s 100% reachability is the stronger result. Hetzner’s 98.9% reflects that approximately 1.1% of global monitoring probes failed to connect — likely from the most geographically distant locations where latency already degrades.
The Hetzner review notes that this architecture uses KVM-based virtualisation on its own hardware with no third-party cloud dependencies. When demand rises, Hetzner responds internally without vendor delays. The 98.9% reachability is a strong result for a European host absorbing global test traffic.
Winner: Contabo on reachability (100% vs 98.9%).
Test 5: Uptime (Uptime Robot, 30-Day Monitor)
| Window | Contabo | Hetzner |
|---|---|---|
| Last 24 Hours | 100%, 0 downtime | 100%, 0 mins |
| Last 7 Days | 100%, 0 downtime | 100%, 0 mins |
| Last 30 Days | 100%, 0 downtime | 100%, 0 mins |

Both providers recorded perfect availability. Hetzner’s ISO 27001:2022 certification and multi-redundant network connections to DE-CIX and AMS-IX provide a formally audited reliability foundation that Contabo’s certification status does not explicitly match.
Winner: Tie on monitoring results. Hetzner on infrastructure certification backing.
Test 6: SSL Security (Qualys SSL Labs)
| Feature | Contabo | Hetzner |
|---|---|---|
| Overall Grade | A+ | A+ |
| TLS | 1.3 | 1.3 |
| HSTS | Enforced | Enforced |
| Nodes Tested | 4 (IPv4 + IPv6) | All passed |

Both providers hold Grade A+. The result is identical.
Winner: Tie
Test 7: Protocol Support (HTTP/3 Check)
| Protocol | Contabo | Hetzner |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP/3 | Supported | Supported |
| QUIC | Supported | Supported |
| 0-RTT | Supported | Supported |

Both providers implement the full modern protocol stack. Both are ahead of providers like DigitalOcean (no HTTP/3) and IONOS (no HTTP/3).
Winner: Tie
Test 8: Environmental Impact (Green Web Foundation)
| Provider | Status | Energy Source |
|---|---|---|
| Contabo | Verified Green | Cloudflare CDN renewable offset |
| Hetzner | Verified Green | Self-owned hydropower (Germany) and hydropower plus wind (Finland) |

This is the one category in the comparison with a qualitative difference worth noting. Contabo’s green certification comes via Cloudflare’s CDN, which means renewable energy credits are attributed to the CDN layer rather than Contabo’s own data centre operations.
Hetzner directly owns its green energy supply chain. Hydropower in Germany. Hydropower and wind in Finland. A solar initiative launched in 2025. This is one of the few providers in this entire comparison series that does not rely on third-party carbon offset purchasing to achieve green certification.
Winner: Hetzner on environmental quality and ownership depth.

The Two Philosophies
Contabo: Density and Global Reach
Contabo’s philosophy is maximum resources per dollar at global scale. High-density server racking in owned German data centres reduces cost per compute unit. The result is resource allocations that make comparable plans from AWS, DigitalOcean, and Vultr look undersized at twice the price.
The global server presence means a developer in Singapore, a startup in New York, and an agency in Frankfurt can all deploy on Contabo infrastructure with competitive latency from the same plan pricing.
Windows Server support and enterprise DDoS protection bundled at entry pricing remove two common additional costs for Windows workloads and security-conscious deployments.
Hetzner: European Quality and Certified Infrastructure
Hetzner’s philosophy is European infrastructure excellence at budget prices. Owning every layer from the physical hardware to the power supply is what produces a 31ms TBT and a 99.97% certified uptime backed by ISO 27001:2022 audits.
The DE-CIX direct peering connection gives Hetzner a genuine network quality advantage for European audiences. Requests from Frankfurt users travel through short, direct paths rather than congested public routes. No CDN dependency means the performance for European visitors comes from the server itself, not a caching layer masking a slow origin.
For companies with GDPR compliance requirements, EU data residency needs, or ISO 27001 certification requirements for clients, Hetzner’s infrastructure documentation is auditable in a way that Contabo’s is not.
Pricing and Value
Contabo Pricing
Contabo’s flat pricing model never changes at renewal. The same 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, NVMe VPS at $5 per month on day one stays at $5 indefinitely. No promotional period. No shock at the end of term one.
Windows Server is available with the appropriate licence added to the base cost. cPanel, Plesk, CyberPanel, and Webmin are all available via 1-click at deployment. DDoS protection is included across all plans.

Hetzner Pricing
Hetzner Cloud uses hourly billing with a monthly cap. Entry-level cloud instances start at a few euros per month in the EU, making them among the cheapest credible VPS options in Europe. The pricing is transparent and there are no upsells or hidden fees.
Hetzner’s dedicated server auction platform lets buyers rent decommissioned older hardware at steep discounts — a unique feature for developers who need raw compute at minimum cost and are flexible on generation.
20 TB of included traffic on cloud plans means bandwidth overages are rarely a concern for standard web workloads.

Ease of Use and Control Panel
Contabo: Choose Your Environment
Contabo allows control panel selection at deployment: cPanel, Plesk, CyberPanel, Webmin, or a raw OS installation. This flexibility lets experienced operators choose the tool they know rather than adapting to a platform-specific panel.
The billing portal and customer interface are functional. The server itself is unmanaged after deployment. Hardware and network issues receive support response. Software, application, and configuration issues are the operator’s responsibility entirely. The skills required for self-managed VPS work are the same ones that determine whether Contabo’s pricing advantage is captured or lost.
Hetzner: Two Panels for Two Audiences
Hetzner Cloud Console is modern, fast, and designed for developers. Creating a cloud instance takes under 10 seconds. Resource monitoring, firewall rules, snapshots, networking, and Kubernetes management are all accessible from a clean interface. A browser-based SSH terminal is included.
KonsoleH serves shared hosting plans with WordPress installation tools and basic database and email management. It is functional but visually dated compared to modern alternatives like hPanel or Site Tools.
Neither panel includes a site builder. Neither guides a beginner. Hetzner’s own verdict is direct: not for beginners.
The support quality distinction is meaningful. Hetzner’s phone support is staffed by qualified engineers, not outsourced call centres. On-site technicians are present 24/7 at every European data centre. For hardware-level emergencies, that physical presence matters.

Security and Reliability
Contabo Security
Grade A+ SSL across all IPv4 and IPv6 nodes. HTTP/3 and 0-RTT supported. Enterprise DDoS protection included on all plans. Automated backups are not included by default but Object Storage is available for custom backup automation.
Hetzner Security
Grade A+ SSL with HSTS and TLS 1.3. HTTP/3 and 0-RTT supported. ISO 27001:2022 certification covers infrastructure, processes, and physical security across all EU data centres. Basic DDoS protection is included. Multi-redundant network connections to DE-CIX and AMS-IX underpin availability.

Final Verdict
Both providers deliver genuine value for developers willing to manage their own infrastructure. The comparison is not about which is the better company in absolute terms. It is about which trade-off set matches your specific deployment.
Contabo is best for: Resource-intensive workloads that need the most compute per dollar, Windows Server users, applications serving global audiences outside Europe, and developers who want flat predictable pricing.
Hetzner is best for: European-primary deployments where network quality matters, projects requiring ISO-certified infrastructure, developers who want the best desktop interactivity performance, and operators who care about genuinely self-owned renewable energy.

Contabo wins six categories outright. Hetzner wins three. Two are tied. But Hetzner’s wins — European peering quality, ISO certification, and direct renewable energy ownership — are qualitative differentiators that Contabo’s numerical wins cannot substitute for in compliance-sensitive or EU-only deployments.

Tactical Recommendations
For Contabo deployments outside Europe, add Cloudflare as a CDN layer. Contabo’s 64ms Singapore TTFB confirms direct server presence. Adding Cloudflare caches static assets at the CDN edge, reducing origin hits for repeat visitors and bringing full-page delivery closer to your audience without changing your infrastructure.
For Hetzner, add a CDN for non-European audiences before going live. Hetzner’s 918ms Singapore TTFB is a physical distance penalty, not a server quality failure. Cloudflare’s free tier in front of a Hetzner server caches static assets globally and reduces the perceived TTFB for visitors outside Europe to under 100ms without requiring a second server. This is the standard pattern for European-hosted applications serving global audiences.
Configure off-site backups on both platforms before production. Neither Contabo nor Hetzner includes automated off-site backups by default on unmanaged plans. Both offer object storage for backup automation. Schedule daily database exports to object storage before your first production data lands on the server. The consequences of missing backups on unmanaged infrastructure are entirely yours to manage.
Hetzner users: complete account verification before starting critical projects. Hetzner’s strict verification process flags VPN connections and mismatched billing details. Sign up from a direct residential connection. Submit ID verification on day one. The verification step is a one-time process and established accounts are rarely affected. Starting a critical deployment before verification is complete creates unnecessary risk.
For Contabo, fix the frontend TBT on production sites. Contabo’s hardware is fast: 527ms lab LCP and 63ms Frankfurt TTFB confirm it. The 6,200ms TBT on their corporate site is a JavaScript problem, not a server problem. On your own site, enable JavaScript deferral and minification in your cache plugin. The server will reward you with an LCP result much faster than what the corporate site shows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hetzner or Contabo better for a European audience?
Hetzner for European audiences, Contabo for global ones. Hetzner’s direct DE-CIX connection delivers 71ms Frankfurt TTFB through one of Europe’s highest-quality exchange points. For pure European traffic, Hetzner’s network peering depth gives it a quality edge. For a mixed global audience — or specifically Asian and US users — Contabo’s 64ms Singapore and 84ms New York TTFB are far better than Hetzner’s 918ms and 266ms respectively.
Why is Hetzner’s Trustpilot rating only 3.3/5 if its infrastructure is strong?
The lower Trustpilot rating primarily reflects account verification and suspension complaints from new users. Hetzner flags accounts created over VPN connections or with billing details that do not match registration information. For users who sign up straightforwardly with a residential connection and complete ID verification, the infrastructure quality is excellent and established customer complaints are rare. The rating reflects the onboarding experience more than the ongoing service.
Why does Contabo offer 8 GB RAM for $5 when Hetzner charges more for less?
Contabo achieves this through high-density server racking in proprietary German data centres and a fully unmanaged model. No software support team, no managed stack, no engineering overhead for customer site issues. Every dollar goes into raw hardware. Hetzner also owns its own infrastructure but prices more modestly per RAM unit while providing more formal certification, auditing, and support infrastructure.
Does Hetzner support Windows Server?
No. Hetzner is strictly Linux-based across all its hosting products. Windows Server is not available at any tier. If your project requires ASP.NET, .NET runtime, or Windows-only software, Contabo is the only option in this comparison. AccuWeb and UltaHost are alternatives in the series with Windows Server support.
Which is better for a startup with compliance requirements?
Hetzner. ISO 27001:2022 certification provides an auditable security and operational framework across all EU data centres. GDPR compliance with EU data residency in Germany or Finland is demonstrable with Hetzner documentation. Contabo does not currently confirm equivalent ISO certification. For client-facing compliance documentation or regulated industries, Hetzner’s certification framework is the more defensible choice.
How does Hetzner’s renewable energy compare to Contabo’s?
Hetzner directly owns its renewable energy supply. German data centres use hydropower. Finnish data centres use hydropower plus wind power. In 2025, Hetzner launched HT Clean Energy, a dedicated solar initiative for further carbon reduction. Contabo’s green certification comes via Cloudflare’s CDN layer, which means renewable energy credits are attributed to Cloudflare’s infrastructure rather than Contabo’s own data centre operations. Hetzner’s approach is the more direct and auditable green commitment in this comparison.
Is either provider good for bare metal dedicated servers?
Both offer dedicated servers. Hetzner additionally runs a dedicated server auction platform where decommissioned older hardware is rented at significantly discounted rates. For developers who need raw compute power and are flexible on hardware generation, the Hetzner auction represents genuine value that Contabo does not offer an equivalent of. For GPU-specific bare metal, Contabo’s GPU server line provides NVIDIA hardware with AI/ML workloads in mind.
